Melbourne, Feb 6 (NationPress) The Melbourne Stars have secured the services of leg-spinner Mitchell Swepson on a three-year agreement on the last day of the BBL's initial player movement window.
Swepson transitions from the Brisbane Heat, where he participated in 87 games over a decade, culminating with the BBL 2023-24 championship.
The 31-year-old boasts 72 wickets in the BBL, averaging 31.12 with an economy rate of 7.66. However, he faced challenges in the 2024-25 season, capturing just four wickets in nine matches with an economy of 8.93.
Since Swepson was not included in the roster of 10 players contracted by the Heat prior to the player movement window, the Stars seized the opportunity and signed him on a three-year contract on the window's final day.
“First and foremost, I want to express my gratitude to the Brisbane Heat for all the chances they provided me, which ignited my T20 career. I will always appreciate the support they’ve extended to me and my family over the years. I’m thrilled to join the Stars, and from what I’ve observed this year, the team has made significant progress.
“I eagerly anticipate heading to Melbourne and the MCG next summer to collaborate with Stoin, Peter Moores, and the entire team,” Melbourne Stars sign Mitchell Swepson on a three-year deal.
Melbourne Stars General Manager Blair Crouch stated that Swepson will fulfill a crucial role within the Stars' roster.
“We have been searching for a high-performing domestic spinner, and Mitch will be a vital component of the Stars' bowling lineup for the next three years. In addition to his bowling prowess, Mitch is a highly experienced T20 player in Australia, offering essential leadership and support to Marcus Stoinis. At 31, he is at the peak of his abilities.”
The current BBL 15 squad of the Melbourne Stars features Scott Boland, Hilton Cartwright, Tom Curran, Liam Hatcher, Glenn Maxwell, Hamish McKenzie, Tom Rogers, Peter Siddle, Marcus Stoinis, and Mitchell Swepson.
